Approved Liquidators: The 2020 Transition

The 2020 transition separated new insolvency appointments from unfinished legacy winding-up cases.

Source checked · 11 October 2026 Historical document

What the document covers

The direction explains the move to insolvency practitioner registration with the Ministry of Law for new cases after IRDA commencement. It separately addresses unfinished older cases.

Specific requirements and implications

ACRA stopped accepting new approved-liquidator applications from 30 July 2020, when IRDA commenced. Existing approved liquidators were treated as a specified class for pending Companies Act or LLP Act cases and did not need to renew the old approval when it expired. The notice revokes the 2005 experience/capacity direction and the 2007 renewal direction. Those legacy instructions are therefore not a current route into new insolvency practice.
