CRS for Account Holders: March 2017 Brochure

The March 2017 illustrated brochure explains what account holders may be asked to provide.

Source checked · 11 October 2026 Historical document

Key steps and distinctions

Singapore financial institutions identify account holders’ tax residences and report relevant financial accounts to IRAS for exchange with partner jurisdictions. Citizenship or permanent-resident status does not by itself answer every tax-residence question. For accounts opened from 1 January 2017, institutions request a self-certification of tax-residence jurisdictions; existing-account holders may also be asked for evidence when records indicate foreign tax residence. Entity accounts can require the entity’s residence and details of individuals controlling it. Cooperate with the institution, provide accurate information and notify it when circumstances change, such as a long-term overseas posting. The brochure notes that residence rules differ by jurisdiction: individuals often depend on length of stay, while corporate rules may use incorporation or effective management. Consult the relevant jurisdiction’s rules rather than assume a single universal test. It explains automatic exchange as a tax-transparency measure, not a new tax on the account balance. The implementation dates and offence information belong to this historical brochure; use current CRS rules when assessing present obligations.
