Life Insurance Relief: Qualifying Premiums and CPF Limits

Relief is available only where the specified preceding-year CPF contributions are below S$5,000 and the life policy meets the conditions.

Source checked · 11 October 2026

Policy and contribution requirements

From YA 2026, qualifying premiums can cover one’s own or spouse’s life, including a wife paying her husband’s premiums. Earlier years had a narrower spouse rule. Policies taken from 10 August 1973 require a qualifying Singapore insurer office or branch. Accident, hospital, health, disability, critical-illness, endowment and listed investment-linked policies or riders are excluded. Obtain the premium breakdown where a life policy includes non-qualifying riders.

Calculate and review the amount

For the current route, compare S$5,000 less the relevant CPF contributions with the lower of actual qualifying premiums and 7% of insured life value. Contributions of S$5,000 or more give no relief. From YA 2023, the specified employee and self-employed contributions form the test; older MediSave examples use different rules. Convert foreign-currency premiums to Singapore dollars. Previous claims can be prefilled, but update them if premiums or eligibility change.
