NS HOME Awards: Exempt Account Credits and Taxable LifeSG Use

IRAS distinguishes the award paid into education and CPF accounts from additional LifeSG credits spent by eligible national servicemen.

Source checked · 11 October 2026

Different components have different treatment

The source describes an S$5,000–S$5,500 award on completion of an Operationally Ready National Service training cycle, paid into the Post-Secondary Education Account and CPF MediSave or Ordinary Account. This component is tax-exempt. Additional S$500 or S$1,000 LifeSG credits disbursed from 1 April 2022 are taxable when spent.

Check utilisation without duplicating the report

Utilisation can be verified in the LifeSG application. MINDEF transmits the taxable value to IRAS, so the recipient need not separately declare it in the income tax return. The page concerns the NS HOME Award, rather than the treatment of every national-service allowance or award.
