Preparing Accounts for Self-Employed People and Partnerships

A statement of accounts comprises a profit-and-loss account and balance sheet. Business owners must prepare it even where turnover is below the submission threshold.

Submission threshold and certification

At revenue of S$500,000 or more, submit certified accounts as the specified single attachment with the return. Certification means the proprietor, self-employed individual or precedent partner signs that the accounts are true and correct; it is not described as requiring an external audit. Below S$500,000, retain accounts and records for possible verification rather than routinely submitting them.

Present expenses and assets clearly

Separate salaries, employer CPF, foreign-worker levy and skills-development levy rather than grouping different costs. Break down miscellaneous expenses. Add back non-deductible private or capital costs and amounts exceeding statutory contribution limits. Maintain a fixed-asset schedule; businesses at the threshold claiming capital allowances submit acquisition, disposal, cost and payment details.
