Responsibilities of a GST-registered business

GST obligations start on the effective registration date, not when the first return is filed.

Source checked · 11 October 2026

Key requirements

Charge and account for 9% on standard-rated supplies, applying the separate customer-accounting rules where prescribed goods qualify. File each return and pay within one month of the accounting period-end, including a nil return when there are no transactions. Keep records at least five years even after cessation or deregistration. Public prices generally include GST; invoice and registration-number requirements also apply. Monitor business changes and cancellation obligations. Voluntary registrants have additional conditions. Late filing and payment have different penalties: submission does not settle tax, and payment does not replace the return. Use the approval letter and portal schedule to set operating controls.
