GST: Voluntary disclosure of errors for reduced penalties

Reduced penalties require a complete, timely and self-initiated disclosure plus cooperation and payment.

Source checked · 11 October 2026

Key requirements

Disclose before the relevant IRAS query or audit/investigation notification to meet the stated self-initiated condition. Correct all errors and pay or honour an approved payment arrangement. Within one year of the statutory filing deadline, a qualifying disclosure has no penalty; afterwards GST has a flat 5% undercharged-tax penalty, unlike income tax’s annual calculation. Withholding and stamp duty have their own rules. Wilful evasion is treated separately. Quantify each affected return and supporting facts rather than filing an incomplete placeholder hoping to reserve relief. A late payment can still need separate attention even where the error qualifies for disclosure treatment.
