Sole-proprietor sentenced to 6 months’ jail and $996,236 in penalties for Income Tax and GST evasions

IRAS publication date:

Case and status

Cubitt Engineering proprietor Eddie Choy Hon Cheong received six months’ imprisonment and an official total of S$996,236 penalties. Nine income-tax charges concerned S$421,995 evaded for YAs 2008–2013 through inflated expenses and omitted sales; 21 GST charges concerned S$33,698.

Facts, amounts and outcome

Three income-tax counts proceeded, attracting S$929,575 penalties. Seven GST counts proceeded, attracting S$66,660 penalties and prison terms running concurrently with the income-tax sentence. The one-dollar difference between the published total and rounded component amounts is retained rather than recalculated. IRAS found the offences through industry audits and data checks. Profit deductions and GST output reporting both depended on accurate sales records.

Disclosure, reporting and rewards

IRAS encourages taxpayers to correct past errors and report suspected tax malpractices. The release says disclosure may be considered when deciding enforcement action; it is not a blanket promise of immunity. Where the release describes informant rewards, qualifying information leading to otherwise lost tax recovery may attract 15% of recovered tax, capped at S$100,000, at IRAS’ discretion. Informant identities are kept confidential. Use the official release links for its reporting and disclosure channels.
