Two brothers sentenced to 2 weeks' in jail and $253,913 in penalties for tax evasion

IRAS publication date:

Case and status

Sibghatullah S/O Mohammed Akhtar and Mohammed Abdullah, brothers and partners of Mohammed Akhtar Carpets, were convicted of omitting investment income of S$871,598 for YAs 2007–2011. Five charges each involved total tax evaded of S$118,559.

Facts, amounts and outcome

Two charges proceeded against each brother, with three considered. Both received two weeks’ imprisonment; Sibghatullah’s penalty was S$130,470 and Abdullah’s S$123,444. Each penalty was three times the tax for that person’s proceeded charges. The source encourages immediate disclosure of past tax errors and explains its informant reward arrangements. Business partners’ investment receipts cannot be excluded merely because the income is not from their main trade.

Disclosure, reporting and rewards

IRAS encourages taxpayers to correct past errors and report suspected tax malpractices. The release says disclosure may be considered when deciding enforcement action; it is not a blanket promise of immunity. Where the release describes informant rewards, qualifying information leading to otherwise lost tax recovery may attract 15% of recovered tax, capped at S$100,000, at IRAS’ discretion. Informant identities are kept confidential. Use the official release links for its reporting and disclosure channels.
