What is Singapore citizenship?
Singapore citizenship is nationality status. A permanent resident (PR) retains a foreign nationality and Singapore permanent residence; a Singapore citizen holds Singapore nationality. Approval of a citizenship application is followed by required formalities before citizenship registration is completed.
A citizenship application is a separate ICA assessment. Holding an EP, meeting an EP salary requirement or completing two years as a PR does not by itself guarantee citizenship.
Swipe horizontally to view all columns →
| Status | Core distinction |
|---|---|
| Employment Pass (EP) | A work pass; the standard adult citizenship route first requires PR status. |
| Permanent Resident (PR) | Permanent residence while retaining a foreign nationality; eligibility depends on the citizenship route. |
| Singapore citizen | Singapore nationality, with the applicable responsibilities, registration and document arrangements. |
Who can apply? Five ICA routes
Check the route before collecting documents. The applicant, sponsor and family members must each meet the applicable conditions.
Swipe horizontally to view all columns →
| Route | Official starting conditions | Who submits / family arrangement |
|---|---|---|
| Adult PR | PR for at least two years and aged 21 or above. | May apply with a PR spouse and unmarried children below 21 born within a legal marriage or legally adopted. |
| Spouse of a citizen | PR for at least two years and married to a Singapore citizen for at least two years. | The Singapore citizen spouse sponsors the application. |
| Child of a citizen | Unmarried child below 21, born within a legal marriage to a citizen or legally adopted by a citizen. | A Singapore citizen parent sponsors the application. |
| Student PR | Resided in Singapore for more than three years, including at least one year as a PR; passed a national examination (PSLE, GCE N/O/A levels) or is in the Integrated Programme. | Age 15 and above uses Singpass; below 15 follows the non-Singpass route. |
| Aged parent of a citizen | An aged parent who is a PR, with a Singapore citizen child aged 21 or above. | The adult Singapore citizen child sponsors the application. |
Conditions and ICA assessment
ICA considers family ties to Singaporeans, economic contributions, qualifications, age, family profile, length of residency, integration and commitment to sinking roots in Singapore. These factors are considered together; there is no published universal salary or points threshold guaranteeing citizenship.
MHA states there is no prescribed test of civic knowledge or English proficiency for citizenship applicants. Specific legal routes can nevertheless have language conditions: ICA explains that an Article 123(1) application requires an elementary knowledge of Malay, English, Mandarin or Tamil. Check the condition that applies to your route.
Male citizens and PRs may be subject to National Service obligations. Families and students should check the obligations that apply to their circumstances before making long-term nationality plans.

Documents: prepare by role
Use ICA’s current checklist and the personalised list shown in the application. “Where applicable” matters: an applicant, non-applying spouse and sponsor do not need an identical set. The table below is an organised summary, rather than a replacement for the official checklist.
Swipe horizontally to view all columns →
| Document group | Applicant | Non-applying spouse | Sponsor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Identity and photo | Recent photo; applicable passport / travel document and non-Singapore birth / household records. | Applicable passport / travel document and non-Singapore birth / household records. | Follow the specific identity fields and checklist. |
| Marriage and family | Applicable marriage, separation, divorce, death, custody, adoption and name-change evidence. | Applicable final divorce judgment, death and children’s previous-marriage records. | Applicable marriage, separation, divorce, death, custody and name-change evidence. |
| Education and qualifications | Applicable certificates, transcripts, skills and professional records. | Applicable certificates, transcripts, skills and professional records. | Not a general requirement in these checklist columns. |
| Employment and income | If applicable: employer letter within three months, latest six months’ payslips, overseas tax records for the latest three years. | The same employment / income categories where applicable. | The same employment / income categories where applicable. |
| Self-employment | If applicable: ACRA registration and three years’ balance sheets and profit-and-loss accounts. | The same business categories where applicable. | The same business categories where applicable. |
| Additional route-specific evidence | NS records where applicable; aged-parent cases also require relevant records of non-applying children. | Follow ICA’s personalised request. | Follow ICA’s personalised request. |
- The employer letter should identify the employment start date, position, basic salary and gross salary. Reconcile the information with payslips and declared employment history.
- For aged-parent cases, the non-applying children’s additional records include applicable birth / household records, latest overseas tax assessment and latest one month’s payslip.
- Documents not in English require an accepted English translation. Follow ICA’s rules for certified copies and embassy, notary or accepted privately translated documents.
- The online photo requirement is 400 × 514 pixels, white background, recent and clear; accepted photo formats include JPG/JPEG, HEIC/HEIF and PNG, up to 8 MB. Check each other upload field separately.

Fees: service support and government charges
Apex Gateway document-support fees are S$1,500 for the main applicant and S$500 per spouse or child. Confirm the exact support scope before engagement. Government charges, translation, notarisation and other third-party costs are separate.
Swipe horizontally to view all columns →
| Item | Amount (SGD) | Stage / fee type |
|---|---|---|
| Apex main applicant support | S$1,500 | Professional service fee. |
| Apex spouse / child support | S$500 per person | Professional service fee for each additional person. |
| Standard citizenship application | S$100 per application | ICA application fee, including the usual adult PR and children-of-PR cases. |
| Citizenship certificate | S$70 | Payable at formalities where applicable. |
| Singapore identity card | S$10 | Age 15 and above, where applicable. |
| Qualifying child born overseas to a citizen parent | S$18, including certificate | Special route: citizen gestational mother, or citizen father married to the gestational mother at birth. Check ICA’s exact category; IC fee is additional if applicable. |
| Translation and notarisation | Provider quotation | Independent third-party charges; confirm before ordering. |
- Government application fees are non-refundable. A service fee is not a government fee and does not purchase approval.
- For a standard adult case, the displayed government components are S$100 + S$70 + S$10 = S$180 if all three apply. This does not include professional or third-party fees.
Application process: from draft to submission
Applications are submitted online through ICA. Each applicant and sponsor remains responsible for their own information, declarations and official login.
- Confirm the eligible route, sponsor and family members, and prepare the current document checklist.
- Start the application and select all intended applicants before proceeding. A new draft is needed if additional applicants must be added later.
- Complete particulars and document uploads in the first seven days. ICA’s roadmap then allows a further seven days for review, declarations and payment: a 14-day draft window in total.
- All relevant applicants review and declare using Singpass or the unique credentials provided by ICA. Final declarations cannot simply be edited after submission.
- Pay the application fee and keep the acknowledgement. Download the submitted application PDF within seven days if you need a copy.
- Use ICA’s update function for later changes and additional documents, and respond within the stated deadline. If the requested update field is unavailable, use ICA’s enquiry channel.

Processing time and application status
ICA normally processes a complete citizenship application within 12 months; some cases take longer. The current main application page states that applications for overseas-born children of Singapore citizens are normally processed within one month when all required documents are submitted.
Use ICA’s official service to check status and notifications. A pending application is not a rejection, and a service provider cannot promise a decision date. The approval letter, SCJ, registration and ceremony have their own later timelines.

Approval rate: what official data can show
The official publications checked provide the number of citizenships granted, but do not provide a matching application denominator from which to calculate a comparable overall approval rate. We therefore do not turn the annual grant count into an approval percentage or a personal success estimate.
The series below excludes citizenship by descent under the current reporting convention. Older publications may use a different total, so figures from different reporting methods should not be mixed.
Swipe horizontally to view all columns →
| Year | Citizenships granted (excluding descent) | Approval rate |
|---|---|---|
| 2021 | 20,297 | Not calculated: no comparable denominator obtained |
| 2022 | 21,802 | Not calculated: no comparable denominator obtained |
| 2023 | 22,140 | Not calculated: no comparable denominator obtained |
| 2024 | 22,766 | Not calculated: no comparable denominator obtained |
| 2025 | 25,094 | Not calculated: no comparable denominator obtained |

If rejected: five practical options
Choose the response based on the decision, the evidence available and any material change. Rejection does not create a guaranteed right to approval on appeal or on a later application.
- Review the submitted case: check eligibility, identity and family records, employment history, translations and any unanswered ICA requests. Identify factual gaps before choosing the next action.
- Submit an evidence-based appeal where appropriate: the current ICA appeal window is within 12 months of rejection. Use the official e-service and explain new information or material evidence; the original sponsor submits a sponsored case.
- Prepare a fresh application after a meaningful change: reassess eligibility when residence, family, employment or other relevant circumstances have materially changed. Do not assume there is a universal six-month reapplication rule.
- Repair document and consistency gaps: obtain missing civil records, correct inaccurate information and reconcile income and family evidence before resubmission. Extra documents should explain real circumstances rather than make unsupported claims.
- Maintain your current PR and travel arrangements while reviewing timing: keep identity records and applicable REP arrangements in order, and reassess the suitable route with your sponsor or family.

After approval: the complete roadmap
An In-Principle Approval (IPA) is an intermediate step. Citizenship is acquired after the required conditions and registration are completed; receiving an IPA alone does not make the applicant a citizen.
Swipe horizontally to view all columns →
| Stage | Action | Timing / checkpoint |
|---|---|---|
| 1 · IPA | Read the letter and follow the individual conditions. Applicants aged 16–60 normally complete SCJ. | SCJ portal access is normally available three working days after IPA issuance. |
| 2 · SCJ | Complete the three components and check the portal record. | Normally within two months of the IPA letter issue date. |
| 3 · Final approval instructions | Follow the outcome letter, including applicable foreign-nationality renunciation and registration instructions. | ICA FAQ indicates around two to three weeks after the last SCJ component for the outcome letter. |
| 4 · Citizenship registration | Attend the appointment with the required originals and applicable proof that foreign citizenship has ceased. | Follow the letter; registration should be completed within three months of the original appointment date. |
| 5 · IC and passport arrangements | Follow ICA’s IC collection notification and passport application procedures after registration. | A passport is a separate document application, not automatic with IPA. |
| 6 · Citizenship ceremony | Attend when notified; the original certificate is normally presented at the ceremony. | Usually three to six months after registration. |

Singapore Citizenship Journey: the three components
SCJ helps new citizens understand Singapore and connect with the community. It is required for applicants aged 16–60 who receive IPA, unless ICA’s individual instructions say otherwise. SCJ’s three components are part of the post-approval roadmap, rather than three separate citizenship approvals.
Swipe horizontally to view all columns →
| Component | What it involves |
|---|---|
| e-Journey | Online learning about Singapore’s history, values, institutions and civic responsibilities, with learning checks. |
| Singapore Experiential Visit / community service introduction | A Singapore Experiential Visit or a half-day introduction to community service, according to the programme arrangement. |
| Community Sharing Session | Meet local residents and community leaders and discuss life and participation in the community. |
- Log in to the official SCJ portal with your own Singpass after access is enabled. Check deadlines and booking availability early.
- If access has expired, you cannot log in or a reminder does not match your approval status, contact the official SCJ / ICA channel identified in the help page.

Renunciation, registration and family follow-up
Adult applicants should follow the relevant ICA approval letter before arranging foreign-nationality renunciation. Do not renounce merely because an application is pending or an IPA has arrived. The required evidence is official confirmation that foreign citizenship has ceased; a cancelled foreign passport alone is insufficient.
Family members included with a main applicant normally complete registration together. Children aged 14 or below can be registered by their parent in absentia; those aged 15 or above attend with the sponsor. Follow the individual letter if overseas collection or other special arrangements apply.
Some people who became citizens by descent or registration as minors must, after turning 21 and before turning 22, renounce foreign citizenship and take the Oath of Renunciation, Allegiance and Loyalty (ORAL). This later requirement depends on the way citizenship was acquired; it is not a blanket rule for all Singapore-born citizens.

Eligibility and assessment6 questions
Is an English test required?
MHA stated in July 2026 that there is no prescribed English-proficiency assessment. ICA separately notes a basic-knowledge requirement in one of four languages for the specific constitutional Article 123(1) route. SCJ includes learning quizzes; it is a later programme, not a general application English test.

Where are the current eligibility rules?
Use ICA’s Becoming a Singapore Citizen page for the applicable route and sponsor requirements. Our eligibility table links back to that official source.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Can I apply after completing full-time NS?
ICA provides an online application route using Singpass after full-time NS. Prepare the Certificate of Service and Service Transcript; service does not make citizenship automatic.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Does completing NS automatically grant citizenship?
No. An application is still required; ICA considers the NS record as part of its assessment.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Can accepting an overseas job affect my application?
ICA’s FAQ links eligibility to economic contribution in Singapore and limits absence during the qualifying residence period. An overseas assignment by a Singapore employer may be considered differently case by case. Update ICA and obtain guidance before relying on an exception.
Sources: Official reference ↗
How much overseas absence is allowed during qualifying residence?
ICA’s FAQ caps absence at half the qualifying residence period or one year, whichever is shorter. The treatment of an employer’s overseas posting is case specific.

Family and children16 questions
How do I apply for a child born overseas?
A Singapore citizen parent applies through ICA using Singpass after obtaining the foreign birth certificate. ICA encourages applying before the child turns one.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Must every child first become a PR?
Not every family route requires a child to become a PR first. ICA distinguishes an unmarried child below 21 included under eligible parental sponsorship from an applicant applying on their own merits, who must be a PR. Check the parent’s route and relationship conditions.
Sources: Official reference ↗ · Official reference ↗
Can a PR spouse apply with me?
A PR spouse may be included with an eligible main applicant. ICA also allows an employed PR spouse to apply on their own merits, subject to the relevant eligibility requirements.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Can a spouse-sponsored PR apply independently?
ICA allows an employed person meeting the residence requirement to apply on their own merits. Otherwise, eligible sponsorship may be through a spouse who is a citizen or is applying for citizenship.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Can my child’s PR and citizenship cases run concurrently?
ICA permits concurrent applications under eligible parental sponsorship, with each product assessed under its own prevailing rules. One application does not grant the other status automatically.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Can I sponsor a sibling after becoming a citizen?
ICA’s citizenship sponsorship routes cover eligible spouses, parents and children, not siblings.
Sources: Official reference ↗
What if a parent is a citizen by descent?
ICA assesses eligibility on receiving the application and encourages filing within a year of birth. If descent eligibility is not met, ICA may consider citizenship by registration before issuing the outcome.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Can an aged parent apply?
The aged parent must be a PR, sponsored through an eligible Singapore citizen child. ICA’s main page requires the citizen child to be at least 21.
Sources: Official reference ↗ · Official reference ↗
What about a child born after I become a citizen?
ICA distinguishes a child born in Singapore under the relevant marriage conditions from one born overseas. For an overseas birth, submit the child’s citizenship application rather than assuming a passport can be issued first.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Can I apply directly for an overseas-born child’s Singapore passport?
The child must first be a Singapore citizen. An eligible parent sponsors the citizenship application online, then follows the passport process once citizenship is established.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Can I apply for other immigration products for my child at the same time?
ICA permits concurrent applications for a child, assessing each under its own rules. The existence of one application does not decide the other outcome.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Can I leave out overseas parents or siblings?
No. ICA requires their information for a complete assessment even if they live overseas.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Can I sponsor a stepchild?
ICA’s FAQ does not allow sponsorship solely on the step-parent relationship because it lacks the required legal nexus. Legally adopted children follow the applicable adoption route.
Sources: Official reference ↗ · Official reference ↗
Can an applicant below 21 apply without parental consent?
ICA requires parental consent before an applicant below 21 can submit a citizenship application.
Sources: Official reference ↗
What if my sponsor dies during processing?
ICA instructs applicants to withdraw the current case and submit a new one, with a new sponsor’s details where applicable.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Can I register while divorcing the spouse who sponsored me?
ICA says a spouse-sponsored approval cannot proceed to registration in that situation. Do not renounce foreign citizenship; report the marital change with evidence through ICA’s enquiry form for current cases.

Do I upload original documents?
Upload copies of the originals and official English translations where necessary. ICA’s current main page asks for certified true copies; retain originals and follow the case-specific instructions.
Sources: Official reference ↗ · Official reference ↗
Are employer testimonials compulsory?
A company testimonial is not mandatory under this FAQ, but may be submitted as supplementary evidence. It does not replace the required employment documents.
Sources: Official reference ↗
What is Number of Staff under Supervision?
It means employees under your supervision, rather than the whole company. ICA allows an estimate if the exact number is unavailable.
Sources: Official reference ↗
What are the documents required to apply for citizenship?
After applicant details and the requested immigration product are entered, the service displays the case-specific required documents. Use that list alongside the citizenship checklist.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Why am I unable to upload documents when applying through my mobile phone?
Check whether the browser has access to the phone’s files and photos. Grant the necessary access yourself and retry with documents meeting the service’s format limits.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Why am I unable to amend my name or surname/ family name in the application form for citizenship?
An NRIC holder must first correct the underlying IC record using ICA’s IC service before continuing the immigration application. Do not work around a locked source field by supplying inconsistent names elsewhere.
Sources: Official reference ↗
What should I do if I encounter an error when I upload photo image for my citizenship application?
Check the displayed error. The shared service accepts jpg/jpeg/heic/heif/png, prefers 400 × 514 pixels, and caps the image at 8MB. Passing upload validation does not mean the photograph has passed ICA’s substantive photo requirements.
Sources: Official reference ↗
I am not able to provide the required document(s) for the citizenship application. Can I provide other documents in place of them?
An alternative should come from the same issuing authority and contain equivalent information. If no such document is available, upload a written explanation; acceptance remains for ICA to decide.
Sources: Official reference ↗
How do I add a missing surname to my IC record?
ICA’s FAQ allows a blue-IC PR holder to request the update through its feedback form with the latest foreign-passport biodata page, without applying for a replacement IC solely for that correction.

Sources: Official reference ↗
Can my sponsor withdraw the case?
The sponsor can use the online withdrawal function. The government processing fee already paid is not refundable.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Why does the case show Withdrawn?
ICA states that withdrawal is initiated by the applicant or sponsor. If the status is unexpected, ask ICA through the citizenship enquiry form.

How do I retrieve the saved draft for my citizenship application?
Return to ICA’s service using the original login. The initial draft is available for seven days from creation; complete the first stage within that period and the declarations/payment stage within the following seven days. Check the precise deadline shown in the service.
Sources: Official reference ↗
How much time do I have to complete my citizenship application?
Stage one gives seven days from draft creation for particulars and document uploads. Stage two gives the next seven days for review, declarations, payment and submission. Missing the fourteen-day window removes the draft and uploaded material.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Can I extend my online draft application for citizenship before it expires?
The published instructions require completion and payment within the fourteen-day window. After the draft is removed, begin a new application; do not assume an extension has been granted.
Sources: Official reference ↗
What can the alternative sponsor do?
It is another possible sponsor identified by ICA. Nomination lets ICA consider available sponsorship options without seeking a further consent at that step; it does not guarantee approval.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Who can edit the details of the citizenship application if an alternative sponsor is nominated?
For applications from 26 June 2024, only the original sponsor makes edits; the alternative sponsor cannot edit the case.

Can I add a new applicant and/or product if my application for citizenship is at the draft stage?
Choose all applicants and products before creating the draft. To add another applicant or product, delete the draft and begin again.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Can I save the application for citizenship as draft and complete the application at another time?
Yes, within the two-stage deadline: seven days for particulars/documents, then seven for declarations and payment. Returning to the service retrieves the saved draft; keep to its displayed expiry.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Can I still withdraw or cancel my application for citizenship after receiving an outcome?
ICA says that an approved case not taken through the required steps will be treated as withdrawn after its approval-validity period. For a linked family case or an active request, notify ICA rather than assuming there are no effects on other applicants.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Can I submit a new application for citizenship if I had submitted an application previously?
A person cannot have another pending application for the same product. The common FAQ specifically includes pre-26 June 2024 cases. A genuinely new person or different product follows its own eligibility and online process.

Where can I view details of my submitted application for citizenship?
Download the submitted application PDF within seven days after submission for current online cases. Save it promptly.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Does nominating an alternative sponsor guarantee a successful outcome for my citizenship application?
No. Nomination provides another sponsorship option for ICA’s assessment; the overall application still needs to qualify on its merits.
Sources: Official reference ↗
How do I retrieve a PDF copy of my application details for citizenship after seven days from the date of submission?
The published download period is seven days after submission for cases filed from 26 June 2024. It does not offer an ordinary online download after that period, so keep a local copy at submission.
Sources: Official reference ↗
I was offered another product which I did not apply for. Is my application considered successful?
For a case filed from 26 June 2024, an assessed alternative offer proceeds to IPA after acceptance and payment. It does not mean that the originally requested product was granted; read which status the offer covers.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Can I apply over the counter without internet access?
The application must still be online. ICA suggests using a location with internet access; ensure that access to Singpass and sensitive documents remains under the applicant’s control.

Open the case summary and select Update information, using Singpass or the non-Singpass reference-ID login. If the relevant document is not listed, use ICA’s citizenship enquiry form with the updated evidence.
Sources: Official reference ↗
How do I correct information already submitted?
Use Update information on the case summary. Where the required field is unavailable, send the request and evidence through ICA’s citizenship enquiry form.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Must I report a change of job?
Update employment details through Update information in the case summary, using the appropriate Singpass or non-Singpass login.

How can I contact ICA about citizenship?
Use ICA’s citizenship enquiry form and identify the relevant application. Keep the reference number available.
Sources: Official reference ↗
How will ICA request more documents?
ICA sends a notification directing you to the official e-Service to read and submit the requested information.
Sources: Official reference ↗
What can I do if I cannot change my address details in the application form for citizenship?
For a citizen/PR sponsor whose form uses ICA’s registered address, update that source record through the address-change service: report the address, verify the mailed PIN, then attach the mailed address label to the IC. LTVP holders receive no IC sticker. Work-pass holders follow the relevant source agency.
Sources: Official reference ↗
What can I do if the person I am applying for does not have a valid email address?
With that person’s consent, use a trusted person’s address or route communications through the sponsor’s email. It will receive instructions and progress updates, so ensure access and consent are clear.
Sources: Official reference ↗
What can I do if I have not received any response on my extension request for clarification?
Before the original clarification deadline, continue submitting relevant available information. After it expires, the response function is unavailable until ICA decides the extension request. A pending extension request is not an automatic extension.
Sources: Official reference ↗
What happens if I did not submit my response to the clarification request for my citizenship application by the expiry date?
ICA can assess the application using the information already held if no response arrives by the clarification deadline.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Why am I unable submit my response to the clarification request for my citizenship application?
The clarification response closes after its deadline. Follow the case’s extension or enquiry instructions rather than assuming another channel automatically satisfies the original deadline.

Processing time and status6 questions
How long does citizenship processing take?
ICA normally processes a complete application within 12 months; complex cases can take longer. Check the official service for updates and avoid a duplicate application while it is pending.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Why is my case still pending after 12 months?
Some cases require longer review. Read any outstanding instructions in the official service and check status there; a long wait alone does not establish approval or refusal.
Sources: Official reference ↗
What does Pending mean?
The case is being reviewed or has instructions awaiting action. Open the official case to check both status and outstanding tasks.
Sources: Official reference ↗
What is the processing time for my citizenship application?
The common FAQ gives normal single-product estimates of six months for PR, twelve months for citizenship and six weeks for LTVP, for applications from 26 June 2024. Do not assume a combined case follows the shortest time. Outcomes arrive by email; no duplicate application is accepted while the same product is pending.

Where can I check my application status?
Use MyICA with Singpass. The non-Singpass service uses the application reference and FIN/UIN as instructed. Read official notifications rather than inferring a decision from waiting time.

Fees and payment8 questions
Where can I verify government application fees?
Check Fees on ICA’s Becoming a Singapore Citizen page and the amount displayed in the e-Service. These are separate from an agency’s document-support fees.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Who may qualify for the S$18 child application fee?
ICA lists qualifying children with a Singapore citizen gestational mother, or a citizen father married to the gestational mother at birth. Its current fee table specifies the overseas-born category; verify the case’s applicable fee.

Can I edit my citizenship application when I'm at the payment page?
Once the final declaration has been submitted, the application is no longer editable through that draft workflow. Review all details before declaring.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Must I make payment immediately upon submission of the citizenship application?
Only a successfully paid case is treated as submitted and processed. If the draft deadline expires before payment, the application and uploads are removed and a new application is needed.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Is the application fee for citizenship refundable?
Once the case is submitted and paid, the processing charge is not refunded whatever the decision. Withdrawal does not turn that payment into a credit for another case.
Sources: Official reference ↗
What are the available payment modes for citizenship application?
Options include Visa/Mastercard debit or credit cards, AMEX, Singapore internet banking with DBS/POSB, OCBC, UOB or Standard Chartered, and PayNow, subject to the choices displayed for the transaction.
Sources: Official reference ↗
What government fees apply to citizenship?
For the usual adult PR route, ICA lists S$100 at application, S$70 for the citizenship certificate and S$10 for an IC for new citizens aged 15 and above. Qualifying overseas-born children have a separate S$18 category. Check the official fee table and case instructions.

How much is Apex Gateway’s citizenship document support?
S$1,500 for the main applicant and S$500 per spouse or child. Government fees, translation, notarisation and other third-party charges are separate. Confirm the engagement scope before proceeding.
Rejection, appeals and reapplication8 questions
Can I appeal for a rejected family application?
The rejection must be within the previous 12 months. The original sponsor submits the online appeal; without a sponsor, the main applicant does so. A non-Singpass case uses the original email address.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Should I reapply after a rejection?
Consider a new application when there is material updated information or evidence. ICA says an unchanged case resubmitted with the same information will have the same outcome.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Who submits a citizenship appeal?
The original sponsor submits it; without a sponsor, the main applicant does so. A non-Singpass case uses the original application email.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Can I appeal while an application is pending?
No appeal is available for the same status while its application is pending. Wait for the decision rather than duplicating the case.
Sources: Official reference ↗
How do I check appeal status?
ICA sends a digital notification when status changes. Check MyICA or the official appeal service for the status and outcome.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Can I withdraw a pending appeal?
The official appeal service provides Withdraw Appeal for a pending appeal.
Sources: Official reference ↗
How long does an appeal take?
ICA does not give a fixed time for every appeal. It reviews each case on its merits and may request further documentary evidence.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Why is the appeal service refusing my submission?
Check the 12-month rejection window, the original sponsor or main applicant login, and the original email for non-Singpass cases.

Download the outcome letter and formalities instructions from ICA’s service. For older applications, use the original application route indicated by ICA.
Sources: Official reference ↗

Foreign citizenship and travel14 questions
Can I travel while the application is pending?
You may use your existing foreign passport while the case is pending. As a PR, ensure a valid REP covers your time overseas before departure.
Sources: Official reference ↗
When should I start renouncing foreign citizenship?
Complete SCJ if required, then download ICA’s relevant approval instructions and present the letter to the foreign embassy or authority. Do not treat an initial application or IPA alone as an instruction to renounce.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Can I travel between foreign renunciation and Singapore registration?
A Singapore passport application requires completed citizenship registration. Plan the transition before renunciation and use ICA’s appointment service if a registration-date change is needed.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Must I renew REP after citizenship approval?
If you remain a PR and need to travel before citizenship registration is completed, ICA requires a valid REP before departure.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Must adults renounce foreign citizenship before registration?
Applicants aged 21 and above should follow ICA’s approval letter to renounce foreign citizenship with the foreign authority, then provide the required evidence for Singapore registration. Do not start solely because the application is pending or IPA has arrived.
Sources: Official reference ↗ · Official reference ↗
Where do I upload foreign renunciation evidence?
Use the citizenship e-Service. If upload fails, use ICA’s citizenship enquiry form with the renunciation letter for help. Older cases may use Upload additional documents.
Sources: Official reference ↗
What is a foreign renunciation certificate?
It is evidence issued by the foreign authority confirming that the person has formally renounced that nationality.
Sources: Official reference ↗
What counts as final renunciation evidence?
Examples are an official foreign-authority letter confirming citizenship has ceased or been renounced, or that the person is no longer considered its citizen. Ask ICA about uncertain documents.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Who explains my original country’s renunciation procedure?
Ask the embassy or relevant authority of that nationality. Procedures and evidence vary by country.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Can I email renunciation evidence instead?
Use the official e-Service upload. If that fails, the FAQ directs applicants to ICA’s enquiry form with the evidence for assistance.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Is a cancelled passport enough to prove renunciation?
No. ICA requires official evidence that the foreign citizenship itself has ended; cancelling a passport alone does not prove that.
Sources: Official reference ↗
What if foreign renunciation is difficult?
Send ICA an enquiry with documentary evidence from the foreign embassy. ICA decides whether the evidence is acceptable for registration.
Sources: Official reference ↗
What happens to my foreign passports after registration?
Ask the foreign embassy about surrendering the passport or passports. Do not confuse passport surrender with evidence of nationality renunciation.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Who handles questions about foreign nationality?
The relevant foreign embassy or nationality authority handles its renunciation procedure. ICA handles the evidence required for Singapore registration.

Sources: Official reference ↗
How is the original certificate collected?
Attend the citizenship ceremony according to the email instructions for collection of the original certificate.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Can the ceremony be rescheduled?
Request rescheduling through ICA’s citizenship enquiry form; await the response rather than assuming a change is approved.

Must my child attend registration?
Children aged 14 and below need not attend; the sponsoring parent completes registration for them. Those aged 15 and above must attend with the main sponsor.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Which originals should I bring to registration?
Use the final formalities instructions in the main applicant’s or sponsor’s ICA account. Older cases may have a downloadable notification letter; bring the documents specified for your case.
Sources: Official reference ↗
Can I postpone registration for several months?
ICA’s FAQ requires registration within three months of the original appointment or approval may be rescinded. Seek an approved extension if needed; a request alone is not approval.

Sources: Official reference ↗
What if I arrive late for my appointment?
Applicants arriving on time receive priority; being late can mean a longer wait. Follow the assigned appointment time.
Sources: Official reference ↗
How do I change a formalities appointment?
Use ICA’s appointment service and keep within the approval’s validity and any citizenship-specific registration deadline.
Sources: Official reference ↗
How do I request more time to complete formalities?
For current online cases, open View Details, then Proceed to Complete Formalities and Request for Extension. ICA must consider and approve the request.
