The buyer’s lawyer should make a legal requisition for outstanding property tax. Arrears can follow the property to the new owner, while current-year apportionment remains a private buyer–seller arrangement. The seller’s lawyer files the Notice of Transfer within one month and identifies the recipient of future tax correspondence. Newly completed property is taxed from TOP, even if the first bill arrives later.
After completion
Review the ownership acknowledgement, pay any outstanding amount and update the relevant personal or corporate mailing address. The acknowledgement states whether owner-occupier rates were applied. Where another home already has that concession, it may not apply automatically to the new home; apply after moving in. Stamp duty and rental-income tax have separate rules.
