Conditions for claiming input tax

Claiming input tax requires registration, business attribution, proper documents and exclusion checks.

Source checked · 11 October 2026

Key requirements

The purchase or import must belong to the claimant and support taxable supplies or qualifying overseas supplies. Hold a valid addressed tax invoice or acceptable simplified invoice, or an import permit naming the importer. Check supplier registration; GST wrongly charged by an OVR pay-only vendor should be refunded by the vendor rather than claimed. Specific restrictions cover motor cars, family benefits, club fees, certain medical and insurance costs and gambling, with stated exceptions. Reasonable checks against missing-trader fraud are also required. Apportion mixed business/non-business and taxable/exempt use instead of assuming payment from the company bank account proves full recovery.
