Legacy Estate Duty: Asset FAQs

The estate-duty FAQ concerns deaths before 15 February 2008 and the historical treatment of specific assets.

Source checked · 11 October 2026 Historical document

Key requirements

For joint assets, the deceased’s funding contribution can determine the assessable share: joint naming alone does not always mean half. The source illustrates CPF exemptions and their interaction with the other-assets threshold, so CPF balances still need declaration in relevant historical filings even when distributed. Property values are measured at death. It also addresses insurance, shares and SRS assets with their own conditions. Read examples with the death date and asset category in view rather than applying a single exemption to the entire estate. The FAQ does not reintroduce estate duty for deaths after the abolition date.
