Preparing for GST rate change

The preparation guide is a historical reference for the completed move to 9%.

Source checked · 11 October 2026 Historical document

Key requirements

The guide explains the January 2023 and January 2024 increases and the need to configure invoicing, point-of-sale and every sales-channel price display correctly. A business that collected an old rate after the change still owed tax at the legally applicable rate, extracted from the inclusive amount if necessary. Public prices must include GST, with the specified genuine service-charge exception for hotels and F&B accompanied by prominent disclosure. Absorbing the increase did not permit invoices to continue stating 8% after the applicable change. Businesses should explain actual reasons and effective dates of price increases rather than attributing unrelated cost changes solely to GST. Use this material for historical checks; today’s rate is 9% and the transition dates are no longer prospective.
