Company Director Convicted for Unlawful GST Collection

IRAS publication date:

Case and status

MV Global Trading director Kumarselvam S/O Veejay Koumar was convicted for GST charged while the company was not registered. He knew its status, personally prepared some invoices and instructed employees to issue the others.

Facts, amounts and outcome

Thirty-four of 102 charges proceeded, concerning S$3,791.21 GST unlawfully shown. The court imposed S$11,373.63 penalties and S$51,000 fines; 68 counts were considered. The 125-day prison period applies to non-payment. IRAS discovered the conduct during pre-registration checks. Customers may verify registration using a company name or business number; an invoice saying GST is not itself evidence that a supplier is registered.

Disclosure, reporting and rewards

IRAS encourages taxpayers to correct past errors and report suspected tax malpractices. The release says disclosure may be considered when deciding enforcement action; it is not a blanket promise of immunity. Where the release describes informant rewards, qualifying information leading to otherwise lost tax recovery may attract 15% of recovered tax, capped at S$100,000, at IRAS’ discretion. Informant identities are kept confidential. Use the official release links for its reporting and disclosure channels.
