Case and status
Lau Hock Chuan, former proprietor of Nanyang Academics Tuition, was convicted of income-tax evasion for YAs 2016 and 2017. The business matched freelance tutors with students; S$400,087 of sole-proprietorship income was omitted, causing S$47,200 of tax undercharged.
Facts, amounts and outcome
Lau pleaded guilty to two proceeded false-return charges and received five weeks’ imprisonment plus a S$141,600 penalty, three times the tax evaded. The release reminds businesses to correct past tax mistakes and report malpractices. A service-matching business must report its business income even where lessons are delivered by independent tutors rather than the proprietor personally.
Disclosure, reporting and rewards
IRAS encourages taxpayers to correct past errors and report suspected tax malpractices. The release says disclosure may be considered when deciding enforcement action; it is not a blanket promise of immunity. Where the release describes informant rewards, qualifying information leading to otherwise lost tax recovery may attract 15% of recovered tax, capped at S$100,000, at IRAS’ discretion. Informant identities are kept confidential. Use the official release links for its reporting and disclosure channels.
