Tree-cutting death: reassess risks when methods change

MOM publication date:

What the release reports

Sin Eng Cleaning was fined S$190,000 after a tree cutter was struck by a falling section and died in 2015.

Details and conditions

Blocked crane access led to manual climbing instead, but risks and safe procedures were not reassessed. The injured worker remained suspended around twenty-three metres high, with no competent rescue climber available in the company.

Context and follow-up

Emergency planning and training must match the chosen method. A plan for crane access does not control the different risks of manual tree climbing; the release links incident illustrations.
