False domestic-worker declarations: two prison sentences

MOM publication date:

Announcement and status

Turla Teresa Espeleta received 25 weeks’ imprisonment in June 2025 and Tungol Renato Reyes received 19 weeks in May. Teresa admitted four false-application counts, with seven other EFMA counts and a false-information charge considered. Renato admitted three counts, with four considered.

Case details and examples

Between 2010–2022 they claimed Teresa would be Renato’s domestic worker to enable residence together during their relationship. She instead worked as a waitress and part-time cleaner. A separate abuse allegation to Police was found false.

Official advisory and follow-up

The release requires truthful declarations and restricts MDWs to domestic duties for the official employer at the declared address. It warns of employer–worker power imbalance in romantic relationships. EFMA false declarations may attract S$20,000 or two years or both, alongside work-pass sanctions; the article distinguishes the proceeded charges from other considered offences.
