Untrained excavator operation: director jailed

MOM publication date:

Announcement and status

SKN director Kasi Seenivasan received six months and two weeks’ imprisonment on 28 March 2022 for a negligent act causing death. The official news date is March 31. Two other company-safety and illegal-employment counts were considered.

Case details and examples

On 1 March 2019, a worker’s skip-bin door was blocked by an excavator. Kasi moved the machine, striking the worker beside the truck; the worker hit the door and died in hospital the next day. Kasi had operated it since September 2018 without formal training.

Official advisory and follow-up

MOM emphasised that machinery must be operated by trained personnel and that the operator must protect others nearby. Director status does not establish competence to operate equipment. The sentence is for the proceeded negligent-act offence, with the other charges considered separately.
