Five layers of physical protection
The December 2019 bulletin uses a layered approach: deter, detect, delay, deny and respond. Visible patrols, cameras and lighting deter; motion or seismic detectors, duress buttons and door sensors detect. Resistant doors, protective glazing, laminated glass or anti-shatter film can delay or reduce effects where professionally appropriate.
Access controls and trained response
Access control combines identification, authentication and authorisation, using cards, PINs, biometrics, turnstiles or interlocking entrances as appropriate. Register and accompany visitors. Train staff in relevant threats and emergency procedures, update procedures and test them. Security alterations must preserve lawful emergency escape; choose current building-security guidance for actual design.
