Renew early and check eligibility
The employer or agent renews online 7–12 weeks before expiry, with an immediate outcome and S$35 fee. WP Online shows eligible workers and lets the employer reprint a missing renewal notice. If the worker travels just before expiry, renew before departure. Late renewal leaves levy payable and can incur levy penalties or overstaying fines; request an extension if unable to renew in time. A renewal appeal needs new information to have a realistic prospect of success.
Prepare passport, bond and insurance
Scan the passport particulars and amended pages. A full two-year pass needs at least 25 months of passport validity. For non-Malaysians, obtain a new security bond and completed form, with bank/insurer details transmitted before renewal. Its effective date can be post-dated up to one day after current-permit expiry. Extend medical insurance or buy a new policy, potentially through the bond provider. Print the renewal notice/application form and check whether a full medical examination is required.
Care plan, addresses and payment
Buy and declare the care plan for CMP workers or dormitory residents in accommodation for seven or more, after receiving the notice and before renewal. Register the residential address and mobile number in OFWAS at least one hour before renewing. Submit through WP Online and follow the specific notice; uploads depend on the entered circumstances. Pay S$35 by GIRO, Visa, Mastercard or eNETS debit. If a new card is required, provide a home/office delivery address and identification, phone and email details for up to three recipients.
Read the notification and card directions
If instructed to retain the existing card, keep it: returning it unnecessarily costs S$65.40 including GST for replacement. If a new card will be issued, cut the old one in half and discard it. The notification lasts one month and allows travel pending the card; give it to the worker and request an extension if travel plans change. Help the worker set up Singpass and SGWorkPass.
Factors limiting the renewed period
Two years is usual, but passport expiry limits validity to one month before expiry and a bond shorter than 26 months limits it to two months before bond expiry. Prior-approval validity and any applicable sector employment-period limit may also constrain the term. Renew passport and bond first to obtain the full period, checking embassy passport-renewal conditions. Complete and declare any required care-plan purchase before renewal.
