Self-Employed EP: Connecting the Employer, Role and Applicant
Start with the actual work: which company will employ you, what will you do and why is the role needed? Incorporation establishes the business; an Employment Pass addresses permission to work. Map activities, duties, relevant experience and remuneration together. Resolve gaps before deciding submission arrangements.
Self-employed describes the context
Clients use “Self-Employed EP” to describe founders preparing to work in their own Singapore company. Planning still needs a genuine business, a defined role and an identified submitting party; the label does not mean automatic approval.
Ownership, appointment and work permission
Share ownership, a director appointment and permission to work are separate matters. Describe your operational responsibilities before discussing company and pass documents. Incorporation should not be treated as work authorisation.
Prepare for the first conversation
Prepare a one-page outline of activities, customers, founder experience, the proposed position and timing. Existing businesses can add operating records. This gives an adviser a clear basis for identifying the next questions.
Preparation Example
If you own shares while managing the business overseas, explain both ownership and the work you intend to perform in Singapore. Share ownership should not be presented as a work pass.
Pre-consultation Checklist
Proposed role and daily duties; incorporation status; current personal status and timing.
EP Questions and Practical Answers
Does incorporation automatically give a founder an EP?
No. Incorporation and EP applications are separate. Ownership or directorship does not replace an Employment Pass. Review qualifying salary, COMPASS or exemptions, the role and employer records. Bring business details, a CV, proposed duties and timing to the first discussion.
