What the release reports
The 2024 introduction proposed two Bills: substantive discrimination protection first, followed by procedures for private claims. Both were intended to commence together.
Details and conditions
Protected traits cover age, nationality, sex and family circumstances, race or religion or language, disability and mental health. Genuine job requirements can justify distinctions: interpreter language skills, safety, privacy or regulatory age limits are examples. Firms below twenty-five employees would initially be exempt from legislation but still follow tripartite guidelines.
Context and follow-up
Employers would investigate grievances, preserve confidentiality, inform staff of outcomes and avoid retaliation. Local hiring preferences and specified supportive hiring remain permitted. This is the proposal stage, preceding the later passage announcements.
