Announcement and status
Former Lian Cheng Contracting operations manager Derrick Ho Chiak Hock faced 61 EFMA charges over alleged S$396,440 kickbacks from 56 workers. A tip-off prompted investigation in November 2020; alleged collections occurred repeatedly from 2014.
Case details and examples
Payments were allegedly demanded as a condition of employment or pass renewal, collected directly or through three workers following Ho’s instructions. Those workers allegedly paid renewal kickbacks themselves. The release reports charges, not conviction.
Official advisory and follow-up
Each kickback count could attract up to S$30,000 or two years or both, with possible restrictions on new passes and renewals. Workers can contact MOM or the Migrant Workers’ Centre for assistance. An employer-controlled intermediary does not make compulsory employment payments permissible.
