Support without judgment
Psychological first aid is practical, humane support during or immediately after a crisis. Help a distressed person feel safe and calmer, understand immediate needs, connect with reliable information and services, and avoid further harm. It is supportive first response, not a diagnosis or a substitute for professional treatment.
The four A.S.A.P. elements
Active listening means attention, clarification and respecting confidentiality. Stay close means being available while respecting personal space. Accept feelings means allowing emotions, silence or refusal of help without judgment. Provide practical help by identifying needs and connecting the person to assistance. Do not force someone to recount the experience.
