Support after crisis
PFA supports recovery and reduces trauma-related stress. Recognise that crisis emotions can be normal, using preparation, observation, listening and linking to support. Official demonstrations address crying, shouting and violence. Dismissing distress or insisting someone cheer up, calm down or be positive can be unhelpful; listen without assuming you know their experience.
Support options and providers
If personal contacts are unavailable or help is rejected, consider HR/supervisor, in-house counsellors/psychologists, family doctor, neighbours or social workers. Provide support contacts for use when the person is ready. Anyone may train in PFA, including people with mild mental-health difficulties, but providers must be capable of caring for themselves before deployment. Red Cross training is linked below.
