Tuas waste-plant fire: containers and spill controls

MOM publication date:

What the release reports

ECO Special Waste Management was fined S$230,000 after a 2017 fire caused major facility damage. Workers evacuated without injury.

Details and conditions

Plastic containers could not dissipate static during hexane transfer, igniting vapour. Earlier hexane and xylene spills were not promptly cleared and helped the fire spread.

Context and follow-up

Risk assessment must consider container compatibility, static control and spill housekeeping. No injury did not remove the employer’s liability for exposing workers to unsafe processes.
