What the release reports
By January 2023, dual-role drivers who have worked onsite for at least six hours must receive thirty minutes’ rest before ferrying workers in rear decks. Every such lorry needs a briefed vehicle buddy.
Details and conditions
Rain protection is phased in for new lorries in January 2023, existing light lorries in July 2023 and heavy lorries in January 2024. At least one canopy side must use transparent protection for lighting.
Context and follow-up
Traffic Police also announced speed limiters for lorries above 3,500kg maximum laden weight, with details to follow. The buddy checks driver fitness and alertness; rain covers and rest address different transport risks.
