What the release reports
Ho Chiak Hock Derrick was sentenced to twenty-four weeks for collecting S$396,440 from 57 migrant workers between 2014 and 2020. He admitted twenty of sixty-one charges.
Details and conditions
Individual demands ranged from S$1,500 to S$15,500 for permit renewal or continued employment at Lian Cheng Contracting. Collection occurred directly or through intermediaries; company management was unaware. Several worker intermediaries were warned and barred from working in Singapore.
Context and follow-up
Workers should seek confidential help from MOM or the Migrant Workers’ Centre when renewal payments are demanded. This conviction is a later development than the September 2022 charge announcement, and the final release reports 57 affected workers.
