Citizenship application routes
Different routes use different sponsors. ICA weighs the applicant’s family connections, economic contribution, qualifications, age, family circumstances, residence and commitment to Singapore. No published points threshold guarantees success.
| Route | ICA eligibility summary |
|---|---|
| Adult | PR for at least two years and aged at least 21; may include a PR spouse and qualifying unmarried children under 21. |
| Citizen spouse | PR for at least two years and married to a citizen for at least two years; citizen spouse sponsors. |
| Child | Qualifying unmarried child under 21 of a citizen, including legal adoption; citizen parent sponsors. |
| Student | PR studying locally; more than three years living in Singapore, including at least one as PR; passed a national exam or in IP. |
| Aged parent | PR and aged parent of a citizen aged at least 21; citizen child sponsors. |
Documents and applicant review
Use ICA’s citizenship checklist, with separate columns for each applicant, non-applying spouse and sponsor. Prepare identity, foreign civil-status, education, employment and relevant family documents. The employment evidence includes a letter dated within three months and six months’ payslips; self-employed persons supply ACRA registration and three years’ financial statements. Applicable NS service records are also listed. Each applicant reviews the form and declares through Singpass or ICA-issued credentials. Non-English material needs an accepted official translation.
Application fees and completion fees
Fees are non-refundable. The overseas-born child concession has specific parentage and marriage conditions, not simply an overseas place of birth.
| Applicant category | Submission | Completion |
|---|---|---|
| Adult PR / children of PRs | S$100 | Citizenship certificate S$70; IC S$10 if aged 15 or above. |
| Specified overseas-born child of a citizen | S$18 including citizenship certificate | IC S$10 if aged 15 or above. |
| Other children | S$100 | Certificate S$70; IC S$10 if aged 15 or above. |
Assessment and final steps
ICA indicates processing within 12 months; overseas-born children of citizens have a one-month indication when the file is complete. Some cases take longer. An in-principle approval still has conditions. Successful applicants aged 16–60 must complete the Singapore Citizenship Journey where required. Keep address and name particulars current, and distinguish the separate oath-taking and citizenship-confirmation procedures.
NS and family consequences
ICA’s NS notice covers males granted citizenship as foreign students or through parental sponsorship, age-related registration and enlistment, and the lack of university-study deferment. Unfulfilled NS duties can affect renunciation and future immigration outcomes for the person and family. Read the full official notice before including male children.
